We usually treat waiting as something to get rid of quickly. However, a peculiar mental state activates when we can do nothing but wait.
Think of an airport lounge, a quiet station, a hallway. The mind resists at first, pushing you to find familiar ways to βkillβ the timeβchecking screens, fixing your hair, removing a sticker from a surfaceβ¦
βIf you hold on just a little longer, resist touching anything, and simply wait, the mind begins to adjust. Without constant input, attention turns inward.β
Thoughts that are usually pushed away begin to surface. Waiting becomes more revealing. You are very close to stillnessβif you allow it.
Let the thoughts be. Do not object to them, do not resist them, do not push them away. And most importantly, do not believe every negative one. Let them pass.
There is nothing to fear in their passing. Something steadier remains when they do.
